The Social Services department (for non-elderly) is located in Senior / Parks and Recreation Building. Social Services relies on donated funds. The Town of Southbury's residents are extremely generous in providing for our less fortunate families. The following is a brief description of the programs that are administered.
The Needy Fund provides a Holiday Program to our needy families. They provide for approximately 65 families or 120 children. The Needy Fund is an ongoing program which provides donated funds to pay for immediate needs for our residents during the year. These requests range from rental payments, Dr's visits (for those who have not been approved for the Husky program which is a state wide program for uninsured children.), school field trips for children whose parents cannot afford payment, electric bills, etc., etc.
The Salvation Army also provides donated funds to help residents in case of emergency. The Social Services office coordinates with the Salvation Army for the Back to School Program, which provides shoes, sneakers and school clothes for children. Determinations of eligibility are made for Salvation Army Camp for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
Food Bank clients are also coordinated through this office for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter Baskets and ongoing food assistance. The Food Bank is open on Wednesday & Friday mornings from 10:00 - 12:00 Noon.
The Community Concern Fund provides payment for medical bills or prescriptions.
All Energy Assistance Fuel Applications are done in this office. These applications are taken as a courtesy to the families in Southbury who qualify for the NOW Program. Applications are taken from October through April.
Social Services works very closely with the Southbury Fuel Bank. There is a Bike-a- Thon held in the fall which provides the bulk of the funds, although many people donate to this fund over the course of the year. All clients must call this office so that arrangements can be made for a fuel delivery of 150 gallons. If electricity is the main source of heat, the bill is paid for from the Fuel Bank, otherwise it is paid out of either the Needy Fund or the Salvation Army.
Referrals are made to all state programs, for example, The Husky Program, State Welfare, WIC, and State Administered General Assistance (SAGA).
Also advising clients if they need to apply for Social Security Disability (SSD) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Determinations are also made for fee waivers for our local teams so children may play all sports in town, for example, Youth Baseball, Youth Basketball and Southbury Soccer, also Special Needs Swim Lessons.
The office is open Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. -- appointments are preferred!
